Segmental retaining walls are considered flexible structures, so the footing does not need to be placed below the frost line provided there is sufficient foundation bearing capacity. in excess of 50 ft (15.24 m)) that could not be accomplished with the units alone. The systems may also employ soil reinforcement that extends into the backfill and allows for the construction of walls with significant height (e.g. Unit to unit interfaces include friction, shear elements, and interlock. The system consists of dry-cast concrete units that are placed without mortar (dry stacked) and rely on their unit to unit interface and mass to resist overturning and sliding. The walls are designed and constructed as either gravity retaining walls (conventional) or reinforced soil retaining walls. ![]() Although the traditional brick color is red, nowadays bricks are available in different colors and you can choose a color that will give a unique individuality to your retaining wall.Segmental retaining walls are modular block retaining walls used for vertical grade change applications. A retaining wall made entirely out of brick is known as a “cavity wall”. Clay bricks are very durable and long lasting with best resistance to water and fire. Clay bricks are manufactured from natural clay, shaped in different forms and sizes and fired at extreme high temperatures. Bricks provide a strong and stable structure and large amounts of soil can be retained effectively. Retaining walls built from bricks offer many benefits and advantages in addition to their functional and decorative values. Retaining wall blocks – clay brick pros and consĬlay bricks are a classic material with a huge aesthetic value. When choosing concrete blocks for your retaining wall make sure that it will blend well with the style of your garden and house exterior. The lip is fitted against the block below it, and creates the interlocking joint. Interlocking blocks are manufactured with a decorative front and a lip on the back. One of the most common ways to build a retaining wall of concrete blocks is to stack them on top of one another and secure them with pins, clips or interlocking edges. There are different types of concrete blocks – interlocking, hollow, solid and half hollow manufactured in high or low density. The market offers a wide variety of designs, types, shapes, colors and textures and a cinder block retaining wall provides both aesthetic value and structural integrity. Modern concrete blocks are far from the simple two cell rectangular unit, also known as “cinder block”. Widely available and at a relatively low cost retaining wall blocks made of concrete are easy to work with. Retaining wall blocks – concrete blocks pros and cons ![]() Retaining walls built with stone blocks are divided into three main types: rubble, cut stone and boulder. The stone blocks are suitable for retaining walls where a mortar is not required and the dry stack method is used. As a manufactured product these stone blocks can have various shapes, designs and textures which replicate natural stone. ![]() An alternative to the costly natural stone blocks are the blocks made of cement mixture, so they are a man-made material which means their cost is significantly less. There are a couple of gift shops at the Lodge, and you can find a wide range of merchandise from swimwear and water shoes, to things like toys, Great Escape logo merchandise, and seasonal items (like holiday ornaments). ![]() We checked this out in the evening when my daughter had gotten in many hours of swimming and was looking for something else to do. There is also an arcade downstairs at the Great Escape Lodge. The prices seemed reasonable – I had a veggie (black bean) burger for $8.49, my husband had a chicken breast sandwich for $8.99, and the kids each had a kids meal (grilled cheese, fries, and a drink) for $6.49. ![]() It was nice not to have to walk outside to get to the restaurant, which is also open to the general public. We ate dinner at Johnny Rockets, which is attached to the Lodge. We actually brought a couple towels of our own, and decided not to use them because it is nice not having to deal with wet towels. So while they aren’t big, you can take a bunch with you right as you enter the park. I had heard that they were small, which they are. Tip-a-Kanu Beach is a cute area for littler kids, so this was the only place my kids didn’t play in at the water park. Upstairs is the Tall Timbers Treehouse, for preschool to school age kids. We had never done it before and the lifeguards gave good instructions to help them figure out how to ride the surf. My kids loved the Boogie Bear Surf, where you can ride a virtual wave. “Tak-It-Eesi-Creek” was one of the kid’s favorites, which is a lazy river that you can swim, walk, or ride a tube. The water park has some basic sections to it – a lazy river, boogie board ride, splash pad for little kids, big slides (which actually go outside the building!), and an area for younger kids. We changed into our swimwear, and headed downstairs. ![]() Soda in the machines were $3.50 and at the water park it was $4.50, so it would help to be prepared.Īfter checking in, the kids were eager to get to the indoor water park. I do recommend bringing some food and drink, even if you just bring snacks. The coffee maker was ok, but I preferred to buy coffee right by the front lobby and in the water park (it was about $2.50-3.00 for a Green Mountain coffee). It is very simple (with a microwave, mini fridge, and coffee maker), but you can save money if you bring some food with you. There is a small kitchenette in the room. The decor is very rustic, with a woodsy feel with lots of log and animal type designs. The Lodge has a very “Adirondack” type theme to it. We braved the snow and headed out in the morning to try to beat the snow. It was definitely a big surprise when we told them to get dressed and pack their swimsuits! Earlier this year we got a Groupon deal to visit during the holidays, so on the last day of school before winter break, the plan was to head out after school (around 2pm), but the kids got a snow day. We have been going to the Great Escape & Splashwater Kingdom every summer for years, and we have wanted to check out their lodge, located in Lake George, New York. ![]() You Notice Problems with the Heating System If you find coolant leaks under your vehicle, then be sure to visit your local Salt Lake auto repair store. If you avoid getting this problem fixed, then you will begin to have a leaking problem with the coolant hoses, and this could continue to affect other related parts. If you find red-ish or green-ish appearing liquid staining the ground, you probably have a coolant leakage problem. The easiest way to see whether your vehicle is leaking coolant is to check underneath the vehicle. If you find coolant leakage, it could be a sign that the thermostat has broken and requires replacement. If the thermostat fails in its closed position, then this can cause the coolant to overflow and leak out of the thermostat container when the engine overheats. Any of these could point to a serious problem in your cooling system because your thermostat isn’t reading the coolant temperature correctly. It could sound like knocking, boiling, or gurgling. If your thermostat is not working properly, you might hear rumbling sounds coming from the engine because the coolant in the radiator is boiling. It is never a good sign when your vehicle makes irregular sounds. In this case, the thermostat may also need replacing. If too cold, then the thermostat could be stuck open, causing overcooling. If working correctly and your vehicle keeps overheating, then there may be an issue with the coolant or engine itself. If it continues to read too cold or registers too hot, then there is the chance that the temperature gauge should be replaced. The temperature gauge will read cold until your vehicle has had time to warm up, after which, it should register the average temperature. You Find Incorrect Readings on the Temperature Gauge Get your vehicle inspected if you notice these extreme temperature changes in your vehicle interior. If you notice sudden and erratic temperature changes from cold to hot or hot to cold, then it could be a sign that your thermostat has stopped working correctly. Your vehicle’s thermostat may also affect the temperature of the air coming from your air conditioning and heating systems. Here are five easily recognizable signs that will alert you that the thermostat needs fixing. If you have either bought an older vehicle or you have not checked yours in a long time, then you need to be able to recognize the signs that the thermostat may not be working. Thermostats can often go bad after about 10 years of use. In this case, your car may not be overheating, but your temperature gauge won’t be able to warn you. ![]() It could be displaying an inaccurate temperature. If you ignore a faulty thermostat it could cause further damage to the operation and functionality of your engine.Ī high reading on the temperature gauge could mean any number of problems from a coolant leak, a water pump malfunction, or broken thermostat gauge. ![]() If the gauge shows a too low or high reading then you need to look into whether the thermostat is working properly, or if you have a corresponding issue in the engine. ![]() Specifically, the dial alerts you about the state of the coolant–whether it is too cool, normal, or if it is overheating. This gauge tells you what the thermostat readings are and whether you may have an issue. You can usually find the corresponding thermostat gauge, or dial, on the dashboard. Your vehicle’s thermostat is a vital tool that is designed for measuring the temperature of the coolant in the engine. Research has also suggested that those vaccinated against certain viral diseases are less likely to develop dementia 4.Īre infections seeding some cases of Alzheimer’s disease?īut all these epidemiological studies have shared a key problem: people who get any type of vaccination tend to have healthier lifestyles than those who don’t 5, meaning that other factors could account for their lowered risk of diseases such as Alzheimer’s. But recent work has suggested that people infected with viruses that affect the brain have higher rates of neurodegenerative diseases 3. The theory has been controversial among Alzheimer’s researchers. The idea that viral infection can play a part in at least some dementia cases dates back to the 1990s, when biophysicist Ruth Itzhaki at the University of Manchester, UK, and her colleagues found herpesviruses in the brains of deceased people with dementia 2. “Even a modest reduction in risk is a tremendous impact.” Dementia–infection link “If it is true, it’s huge,” says Alberto Ascherio, an epidemiologist at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who was not involved in the study. The study was published on the medRxiv preprint server on 25 May and has not yet been peer reviewed. ![]() But some puzzling aspects of the analysis have stirred debate about the work’s robustness. ![]() The analysis found that getting the vaccine lowers the risk of dementia by 20%. ![]() Vaccination against shingles might also prevent dementia, such as that caused by Alzheimer’s disease, according to a study of health records from around 300,000 people in Wales. Mast cell tumors: these are cancerous tumors that may occur either beneath or on top of the skin. They’re caused by an overproduction of immune cells and typically disappear on their own. Button tumors: also known as a histiocytoma, these are benign tumors that affect puppies and young dogs between eight weeks and three years of age.Antibiotics may be required to treat the infection. If not treated early they may burst, which is painful for your pup. I had a trip planned to Barcelona with Boyfriend in October and I just knew that would be the place to really put the travel purse to the test.įor starters, we'd only be traveling with just a small carry-on suitcase, a rucksack (for food :p) and the Pacsafe for the two of us. Barcelona, on the other hand, is one of the pickpocketing capitals of the world and is notorious for tourist scams. I'd been comfortable carrying the Pacsafe purse around in Leuven, but of course, Leuven isn't known as Pickpockets Paradise. The Pacsafe anti-theft travel purse in Barcelona You can attach the zipper to a hook that's fixed on the shoulder strap and then block that hook with a sliding mechanism so that it's impossible to open it unless you know of the system – and even then you really have to be able to look at it closely to get it open. This anti-theft purse also has a smart zipper. I also think I made a good choice choosing the black version as that doesn't draw too much attention to the fabric. As you can see in the picture, I still had quite some space left.Īlthough you can feel by the fabric that it isn't a regular handbag, I don't think it looks that way. I decided to be easy on the Pacsafe anti-theft travel purse the first time I used it and I only took some necessities with me: paper tissues, lip balm, my wallet, smartphone, sunglasses, and a small bottle of water. On this day you'll find shopping stands, street artists, and sports demonstrations in the center of Leuven and so Boyfriend and I went to have a look. I received the Pacsafe travel purse through the mail and the first trip I took it on was just a little “test drive” during Leuven's car-free day (see what I did there?). I chose the black version as it goes with everything and black is a color I wear a lot. The Pacsafe Citysafe 100 GII comes in Black, Midnight Blue, Walnut, Plum and Crimson Red. It seemed like the bag I was looking for, but as I was trying to downsize at the same time, the Pacsafe Citysafe 100 GII, a smaller version of the Hobo Bag, seemed even more appropriate.Īfter contacting Pacsafe they kindly agreed to offer me this anti-theft travel purse to review. The Pacsafe Citysafe 400 GII Hobo Bag was even featured on a top 5 travel purses list on Her Packing List. So I started looking around and I repeatedly stumbled upon the Pacsafe brand. Pacsafe review: the Pacsafe Citysafe GII anti-theft travel purse A sore shoulder at the end of each day made me revise my strategy: I needed to take less with me and thus, I could also use a smaller bag.īut what kind of bag? I have plenty at home, but none of them seemed to be just what I was looking for: my comfi handbags that were easy to lock couldn't be worn across the body (theft risk!), my shoulder bags were either way too small (they do still have to be able to fit a camera, notebook, phone and bottle of water), or too flashy (fluo pink just isn't that easy to combine) and I neither find a rucksack safe nor practical (you always have to take that thing off if you need something. I always used to take a rather big shoulder bag or handbag which I could stuff with everything I might possibly need during the day. Whenever I'm packing for a trip I'm faced with the same question: what bag to take? I'm not talking about my main luggage here, but about the bag I'll be lugging around during the day. |
